Co-ordination, Communication and Adaptation for Climate Change inIreland: an Integrated Approach (COCOADAPT) – EPA Climate ChangeResearch Programme (STRIVE)

Climate change impacts on biodiversity

Project background
The European Commission’s Green paper Adapting to Climate Change inEurope-options for EU action highlights the need for early action inimplementing climate change adaptation strategies. It argues that suchstrategies, if acted on now, will bring about clear economic benefitsand minimise threats to ecosystems. COCOADAPT is an integrated projectled by NUI Maynooth within which the impacts of climate change onbiodiversity will be investigated by a member of the team based at NUIGalway. Irish Natura 2000 sites (with particular reference to wetlands)will be examined to assess ecological changes that may have taken placeas a consequence of observed climate changes and predict futureecological composition due to climate change employing a climate spacemodelling approach. Key vulnerable habitats will be identified andranked in terms of conservation priority to enable planners andstakeholders to inform strategic decision making procedures concerningbiodiversity impacts of climate change.

• A PhD in Botany, Ecology or Environmental Science
• An in-depth knowledge of ecosystems of temperate regions and detailedfamiliarity with Irish habitats
