Description

NIH funded position available immediately to identify respiratorypattern generating or chemosensory neurons in tadpole hindbrain usingoptical and electrophysiological methods. The projects overall aim is tounderstand the cellular basis of respiratory pattern generation in thetadpole and to determine how this changes during the transition fromaquatic to aerial respiration. A background in some aspect ofrespiratory biology is required and experience in fluorescence imagingor electrophysiology is highly desirable. This project is part of acollaboration between UCSF and the University of Alaska at Fairbanks viathe NIH. Other projects in the Bickler laboratory currently involvepost-hypoxia neurogenesis in hippocampal slice cultures, neurogenesisfollowing dormancy in turtles, mechanistic basis for hypoxia tolerancein hippocampal neurons in hibernating mammals, role of TREK and TASKbackground potassium channel currents in hypothermia tolerance inneurons, neuroprotective signaling processes in anesthetic and hypoxicpreconditioning of neurons, and neurotoxicity and neuroprotectiveactions of anesthetics. Send CV and 3 letters of reference to: PhilipBickler, MD, PhD (bicklerp@anesthesia.ucsf.edu), Dept. of Anesthesia,University of California, 513 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco, CA 94143-0542.

“UCSF’s research successes span the range of medical science, fromidentification of disease-transmitting proteins called prions, to thecreation of the original genetic engineering techniques, to discoveriesabout the nature of afflictions like AIDS and cancer. (See researchachievements.) Triumphs like these have resulted in countless patentsand numerous prestigious awards, including the three Nobel prizesawarded to UCSF scientists over the last 14 years.

Now, the research space at UCSF is set to nearly double upon completionof the Mission Bay campus. Extensive new laboratory space and researchfacilities will open the way for new research projects and the expansionof existing programs, accelerating the already dramatic pace ofdiscovery at UCSF.” We invite you to join UCSF and be part of our successes!
