Description
Currently, Dr. Tina Izard’s laboratory (at The Scripps ResearchInstitute, TSRI, in Jupiter, Florida) has openings for a post-doctoralfellow in Protein Crystallography. The lab is focused on unraveling theregulation of cell migration and morphogenesis, which relies on thecell’s ability to form specific contacts with its neighbors or with theextracellular matrix (ECM) through dedicated adhesion receptors.Contacts with the ECM are directed by integrin receptors, which areunique in directing both outside-in and inside-out signaling pathways.Activation of integrin receptors triggers the rapid reorganization ofthe actin cytoskeleton and this relies on the function of talin andvinculin, which were previously thought to act as scaffolds that bridgeintegrin receptors to the actin cytoskeleton. Surprisingly, ourstructural, biochemical, and cell biological studies have revealed thatthese proteins function as direct signaling effectors that, byundergoing dramatic changes in their structures, transmit the outside-insignal (http://www.scripps.edu/florida/cancerbio/izard/).
Successful candidates will work in a cutting-edge research environmentthat tackles this important new arena in cancer and cell biology. Thelaboratory has outstanding facilities for molecular biology; proteinexpression, purification, and biochemistry; and protein crystallography.
We are seeking a PhD graduate to determine the crystal structures ofseveral important cytoskeletal proteins. Candidates should haveexperience in crystal structure determination as well as an interest inthe biology of cytoskeletal proteins. The position provides anoutstanding training program in protein biochemistry and structure, andalso in molecular and cellular biology, in a highly funded, dynamic, andteam-oriented research program.
TSRI-Florida provides an incredibly rich scientific environment.Notably, TSRI faculty include an outstanding cadre of senior colleagues,including three Nobel Laureates and twenty three Members of The NationalAcademy of Sciences, including several in crystallography andbiophysics. TSRI-Florida will be moving into three new, state-of-the-artresearch buildings by November 2008 and will expand to eventually house80 faculty-level investigators. The TSRI-Florida’s unique infrastructureincludes the application of unique chemical, genomic, proteomic,informatics, and high-throughput screening and engineering tools for thediscovery of novel biomolecules.
TSRI-Florida is a new member of the South East Regional CollaborativeAccess Team (SER-CAT) that constructed two beam lines at the AdvancedPhoton Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. The insertion deviceand bending magnet beam lines are available for all thesynchrotron-related data collection needs for the post-doctoral fellows.
TSRI-Florida purchased a HighFlux X-ray diffraction system, specificallya Rigaku MicroMax-007 HF, a second-generation true microfocus rotatinganode generator. TSRI-Florida also purchased an Osmic VariMax opticssystem and the Proteros Free Mounting System to control the humidity andto optimize diffraction characteristics, including resolution,mosaicity, and anisotropy, as well as reduced X-ray background. Finally,the X-ray laboratory houses the mar345 Image Plate detector.
