Joint Postdoc Position at the Depts. of Neuroscience and Woman and ChildHealth, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
Project title: Generation, Propagation and Termination ofThalamocortical Network Oscillations.
The project is aimed at understanding the initiation, propagation andtermination of network oscillations in the thalamocortical network.Investigations are performed on spontaneously active slice preparationsof the cortex and thalamus that express rhythmic network activitysimilar to what is observed in vivo in humans and experimental animals(slow oscillation in the cortex and spindle waves in the thalamus). Thepurpose is to adapt these slices to optical recordings (primarily withCa2+-sensitive dyes), using confocal and multiphoton imaging. This willallow an unprecedented opportunity to determine the spatiotemporalproperties of network oscillations; e.g. in which layers oscillationsare generated, through which layers and cells it is propagated throughthe circuitry and the mechanisms that constrain its spread to preventthe progression into epileptic discharge. The role of differenttransmitters and neuromodulators in shaping the oscillations is alsoinvestigated. Through parallel electrophysiological recordings, thecellular mechanisms underlying network effects will be investigated.Part of the postdoctoral fellow’s time will also be spent assembling andconfiguring a whole-cell recording set-up.
The project is a collaboration between the laboratories of ChristianBroberger at the Dept. of Neuroscience(http://www.neuro.ki.se/broberger/) and Hjalmar Brismar at the Dept. ofWoman and Child Health (http://www.cellphysics.kth.se/ki/) and Dept. ofCell Physics, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm(http://www.cellphysics.kth.se/index.html). The applicant is required tohave a PhD in neuroscience and 2+ years experience of whole-cell patchclamp recording. Experience in optical recording is an advantage, butnot required. Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential.The position is available from January, 2009.
