Description

The Ecology Department has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate who will performs semi-routine research assignments such as the collection and processing of data along with minimal analysis. You should have a basic knowledge of microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science. You will interact with supervisor and other RAs, post-docs and students in the work group as well as your supervisor’s collaborators.

As a Research Associate, you will:

1.Be responsible for assisting with ongoing research and field study on the composition and function of complex microbial communities.

2.Extract and purify DNA/RNA from environmental samples, analyze microbial community composition using state-of-the-art microarray technology, gene cloning and quantitative PCR.

3.Culture aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, perform routine laboratory maintenance.

4.Perform chemical analyses (ion chromatography/kinetic phosphorescence analysis) on effluent samples from laboratory column experiments.

Key Success Factors:

1.Assist in the preparation of research material for publication in scientific journals and for conference presentation.
Significant hands-on experience in microbiology and/or molecular biology.

2.Substantial knowledge and experience in DNA/RNA extraction and purification, PCR amplification and microbiological culture techniques.

3.Some knowledge of DNA cloning and sequencing and basic chemistry.

4.Capable of following instructions, troubleshooting methods, and maintaining scientific notebooks.

5.Ability to learn state-of-the-art equipment and technique usage.

6.Good written and oral communications skills.

7.2 years of relevant experience for a level 1; 2-5 years of relevant experience for level 2.

8.Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or in a related field or equivalent experience for a level 2; Masters degree or equivalent experience for a level 3.

9.Experience with Macintosh and PC using standard application programs.
