Postdoctoral Research Associate in bacterial pathogenesis

This exciting opportunity has been created by the award of a Wellcome Trust 5 year programme grant to the University of Glasgow and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This project has been designed in response to the continual rise in Clostridium difficile associated disease (CDAD) worldwide and the accompanied emergence of at least two highly virulent clones, which had until recently been rarely isolated from human patients. Our aim is to determine whether there are genetic and phenotypic differences between related but historically distant strains that may be responsible for the increased virulence observed. The approach taken will require study of the infection process at the molecular level within the animal model. Once genetic traits have been identified, mutant strains will be created and their role in pathogenesis determined in vivo.

 For this position, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual, with strong molecular microbiology and/or cell biology skills. Applicants should have a post-doctoral experience and a good track record in research as evidenced by their publication record in high impact journals. Whilst the majority of the 5 years will be spent in Glasgow, we are looking for an enthusiastic individual with good communication skills to liase and disseminate data and techniques between the Glasgow and London based groups.
