A two-year postdoc position is available for the period 1 May 2010 to 30 April 2012 at Aarhus University, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Dept. of Genetics and Biotechnology, Research Centre Flakkebjerg in the research area “Improvement of the amino acid composition of barley and wheat”.

Research area
The general objective of the post doc project is to increase the protein content of the barley and wheat grain while at the same time improving the protein quality to achieve a better nutritional quality and reduced environmental impact (higher content of lysine, threonine, isoleucine, leucine and valine and a lower content of glutamine and proline). The approaches and technologies implemented will be transformation, molecular biology and biochemistry. The project will comprise a characterization of existing materials, including a European collection of transgenic lines with an altered composition of storage proteins as well as the generation of new lines by genetic transformation.

The project is integrated in a research group with competencies in storage protein biochemistry, transformation and molecular biology. The general objective of the group is to characterize the mechanisms behind storage protein accumulation in the barley and wheat grain and the effects of storage protein composition on the baking and feed quality as well as mineral content. A PhD position and technical assistance will be associated to the advertised postdoc position.

Required qualifications
Relevant academic education from a university or academic institution is required as well as a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications within plant molecular biology. Applicants with a thorough knowledge within plant molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and transformation of cereals will be preferred.

The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Forsøgsvej 1, DK-4200 Slagelse.

Salary and terms of employment
Salary and terms of employment are according to current agreement for state-employed academics as well as the appointment structure of 2007 for scientific personnel at universities
