Description:

Main Tasks & Responsibilities :
A Postdoctoral fellow is expected to investigate promising potential research or technology areas in which the company is interested. He/she should push forward the project allocated to him/her with the aim of having the results published in high impact journals.

The successful candidate will be required to follow up on hits from Merck Serono’s Tropical Diseases screens, using modern technologies of synthetic Medicinal and Combinatorial Chemistry. Pharmaceutically interesting chemical scaffolds will be developed into primary and focussed combinatorial libraries, with the help of our combinatorial chemistry infrastructure at SynGene

The job holder:
• will have to interface with the scientists of medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, combinatorial chemistry and of the structure-based design group through meetings, reports or internal communications.
• should understand and defend the rationale and hypothesis for experimental design and should search databases for new literature, data or compounds.
• should be aware of the strategic importance of his/her project work with respect to our Geneva Research Center’s goals.
• will design, execute experiments and suggest protocols or modification to existing protocols.
• will effectively operate a range of laboratory instrumentation and recommend modifications/upgrades.
• will independently seek help from other scientists to solve problems with protocols and to learn new techniques.
• will be capable of identifying potential problems in experiments and solving them.

Note:
The initial contract is limited to one year with possible additional extensions.

Education & Languages :
• Fluency in English, required
• French knowledge, an asset
• PhD in organic chemistry

Professional Skills & Experience :
• Experience in multi-step synthesis is essential
• Experience in solid-phase chemistry an asset
• Able to read and critically evaluate the specialized literature

Personal Qualifications & Competencies :
• Problem-solver, independent and dynamic
• Excellent interpersonal skills and team-player
• Capacity to publish in peer reviewed journals
