Description:

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the Chang lab at the University of California, San Diego. The laboratory is focused on understanding the mechanisms by which stem cell-like progenitors maintain themselves while continually produce terminally differentiated progeny, using T lymphocytes as a model system. During an immune response, a responding T lymphocyte must give rise to terminally differentiated effector cells as well as self-renewing memory cells. We have recently provided evidence that a naïve T cell accomplishes this task by exploiting an evolutionarily conserved mechanism called asymmetric cell division (JT Chang, SL Reiner, Science 2007). During asymmetric division, a dividing cell imparts unequal inheritance of its components to its two daughter cells, making them different from inception. We are currently identifying and characterizing novel mechanisms that underlie asymmetric division in T lymphocytes. We anticipate that this research will contribute to our understanding of how differentiated cells are produced without depleting progenitors, as well as how immunity to microbial pathogens is initiated and maintained. The successful applicant will gain experience in (1) developing multi-disciplinary approaches towards understanding T cell differentiation and basic mechanisms of asymmetric cell division and (2) developing cutting edge techniques in molecular and cellular immunology, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy.

Skills and Knowledge Required: A Ph.D. or M.D. degree with strong skills in molecular biology/cloning, cell biology, and immunology. Experience making knockout/transgenic mice is desirable. Experience with confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and animal models of disease is also desirable. Prospective candidates should be highly motivated individuals with excellent communication/ interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work independently.

Contact:

Candidates are encouraged to send a cover letter with a statement of research interests, curriculum vitae, including publication list, and names and e-mail addresses of three referees to Dr. John Chang by email (changj@ucsd.edu).
