Description:
3D characterization of nanocomposite foams by X-ray microtomography coupled to image analysis
The research will be part of a multidisciplinary project titled “From imaging to geometrical modelling of complex micro structured materials: Bridging computational engineering and material science”. It gathers departments Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Liège (Belgium).
The postdoctoral fellow will work in the Department of Chemical Engineering, which has extensive experience in the field of tomography and image analysis, under the guidance of Prof. A. Léonard and Dr. C. Gommes.
The materials to be investigated are nanocomposite foams synthesized by one of the partner laboratories, using several synthesis conditions, polymer matrices and nanofiller loads. As a first step, the fellow will work on the optimization of X-ray microtomography acquisition protocol, in order to optimize both the quality (contrast, resolution) and the size of the reconstructions.
The second step will consist in the development of 3D image analysis algorithms for measuring the following morphological information: the total porosity (open and closed cells), the cell size and wall thickness distributions, the connectivity of the cells (tortuosity), orientation statistics, etc.
The aim of the research is to determine the relationships between the foam formulation and preparation, its nano/micro structure, and its useful macroscopic properties. The candidate will also be involved in the analysis of electron tomography (3DTEM) reconstructions, as well as in the in situ analysis of microstructure deformation of the nanocomposite foams inside the microtomograph.
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in Engineering, Materials Sciences, or Physics and have experience in image analysis, including computer code development. Working knowledge of Matlab is an asset.
Salary: about 2000 €/month after taxes (depending on master degree)
Contract type: 12 months (renewable for 12 months depending on research progress)
Contract start date: September 1st
Conditions: The candidate must not have lived or worked for more than 24 months in Belgium during the last 3 years.
