ANALYSIS OF SIGNALLING EVENTS CONTROLLING PHAGOSOME BIOGENESIS USING MASS SPECTROMETRY AND CELL BIOLOGY
Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to work with Dr Matthias Trost on a project aimed at understanding the signalling events that affect phagosome biogenesis. These organelles, which are formed by the uptake of particles such as pathogenic bacteria, play key roles in innate and adaptive immunity. The project will exploit the laboratory’s expertise in the analysis of proteomes and phosphoproteomes using mass spectrometry and cell biology techniques. The proteomics facility is equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometers including three LTQ Orbitraps (XL and Velos).

Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications
We seek talented, motivated and interactive scientists with strong problem-solving skills, and who have recently obtained a Ph.D. or expect to obtain one in the near future. The successful applicant will have an outstanding academic track record, have published at least one first authored paper in a major journal and preferably have experience in the fields of biochemistry and mammalian cell biology. Knowledge and working experience with mass spectrometry systems and quantitative proteomics would be advantageous, but is not essential. The position is for a period of 3 years and is available immediately, but applicants wishing to start at any time up to 1st March 2011 will be considered.

College / School / Directorate Information
The MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit is a major international centre for research on cell signalling and is funded and equipped to the highest international standards. Its innovative collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry won a Queen’s Anniversary Award for higher education in 2006. The Unit is based within the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee, which was voted Europe’s “Best Place to Work in Academia” in this year’s 8th annual worldwide survey compiled by The Scientist magazine
