Description
A research position is available for a highly motivated post-doctoral fellow to join the research team of Dr. Brenda Gerull at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute (http://www.libin.ucalgary.ca) at the University of Calgary, Canada.
Our laboratory is interested in molecular and genetic mechanisms of ‘Familial forms of heart failure’ in particular in the pathogenesis of Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) using a combination of biochemical, genetic (human and mouse) and cell biological approaches. The project is focused on the role of cell-cell junctions in the pathogenesis of ARVC using mouse models employing transgenic techniques and primary cell culture experiments. Our main focus is to define the adhesive and signaling contributions of different mutated desmosomal proteins in maintenance of cardiac cells and tissue.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in Molecular biology (or equivalent), ideally with a cardiovascular background and strong experience in molecular and cellular techniques as well as human and mouse genetics. Applicants will expect to have demonstrated an excellent academic and publication record. The ability to work both independently and as a team member and excellent communication skills will be an advantage. The successful candidate has to be enthusiastic to bring his/her own ideas and support in establishing a new laboratory.
The position is available immediately and supported by a grant of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. The term of employment will be three years with continuation dependent on the candidate obtaining funding.
