Background
A postdoctoral position funded by a Marie Curie project (MOTET) is available within an active and highly

interdisciplinary cancer metabolomics research program. The position will be jointly supervised by Mark Viant

(School of Biosciences), Chris Bunce (School of Biosciences) and Ulrich Günther (Cancer Studies). The position will

initially be funded for 2 years, with extension dependant upon successful acquisition of continued funding. A close

collaboration between the new Henry Wellcome Building for Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopy (HWB•NMR) at Birmingham.

The focus of the research will be NMR based metabolomics in a cancer context including the analysis of cellular

models, tissue samples and body fluids.

Duties
The focus of this position will be the preparation of metabolite and protein samples from cultured cells and their

analysis using current and developing NMR approaches. Target cells will include cell lines representative human

leukaemias, prostate cancer and neuroblastoma. Aldoketoreductase-1C3 activity in these cells will be manipulated

using transgenic approaches to either elevate or knock down expression and following exposure to non-steroidal and

steroidal inhibitors. Work in this context will also include the development and implementation of new NMR

techniques including fast methods to record multi-dimensional spectra, dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP)

experiments and software for data evaluation.

Qualifications
Applications are invited from experienced researchers who have already obtained a doctoral degree or who have

worked in their field of expertise for at least 4 years after graduation from university. Applicants should either

have a background in biochemistry or biology, some experience in NMR spectroscopy or software development will be

beneficial.

Additional Notes

The HWB•NMR provides an excellent environment for research in the areas of biomolecular NMR spectroscopy and

metabolomics. The NMR centre houses several newly installed spectrometers from 500 to 900 MHz with various

cryogenically cooled probes and automated sample changers.

In addition, the HWB•NMR has been established as Varian Inc.’s European test site for NMR metabolomics research,

and as a BBSRC-funded European High Throughput NMR Centre for Metabolomics and Ligand Discovery. The laboratories

for cell culture work in the School of Biosciences have been newly refurnished, and a fully equipped laboratory for

production of recombinant proteins is also available.

Transnational mobility regulations apply for this position, i.e. researchers must not have resided in the UK for

the past 12 months and should be EU residents.
