One additional Postdoctoral/Research Associate Position is availableimmediately to study epithelial signaling by a novel prosecretorymitogen in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Virginia.The Department and University are respectively ranked #4 (by NIH amongUS Cell Biology) and #2 (US Public Universities).
Our research is revealing important new insights into epithelial mTORand NFAT signaling.
Specifically our research concerns the epithelial mitogen ‘lacritin’that targets syndecan-1 via a novel heparanase-dependent mechanism (J.Cell Biol. 174:1097-11062006). Core protein binding initiates pertussistoxin-sensitive mitogenic signaling through PKCalpha, NFAT and mTOR (J.Cell Biol. 174:689-7002006). Pertussis toxin sensitivity suggests theinvolvement of a G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR). Topics underinvestigation include: (i) application of recently developed/untestedsyndecan-1 deletion and point mutants to define the site of interaction,(ii) identification of the GPCR and application of FRET to develop adynamic model of the lacritin receptor complex, (iii) dissection oflacritin’s upstream signaling pathway and (iv) understanding howlacritin is cytoprotective for epithelia. The new topic ready forinvestigation (one postdoc position) will apply unbiased screens,mutational analyses and siRNA technology to understand NFAT/mTORcrosstalk in lacritin signaling.
Successful applicants will benefit from a Lacritin Consortium ofcollaborating labs from four area institutions. Data meetings are held 3– 4 times a year with Consortium undergrads, grads, postdocs and faculty.
