POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW – ITT002 [Extraction / Anti-oxidantactivity / Immunomodulatory activity / Fermentation / Phenotypic Analysis]
The Institutes of Technology based at Tralee and Limerick have unitedtheir research interests to establish a world-class research centre inthe area of Applied Biotechnology i.e. Shannon Applied BiotechnologyResearch Centre [Shannon ABC].
Shannon ABC combines strengths in areas including natural productdiscovery, bioactive screening, nutraceuticals, fermentation andbioprocessing. The centre is core funded by Enterprise Ireland andhouses state-of-the-art research facilities. The overall mission of theShannon ABC is to drive, develop and deliver valuable and integratedapproaches to solving problems associated with the better utilisation ofnatural materials and the novel bioresources they contain.
This position will focus on developing mechanical and enzymaticdigestion protocols suitable for isolation of biologically activecompounds from fish waste, yeast biomass and / or vegetative rawmaterials. In addition, laboratory bench work will be undertaken incollaboration with the Shannon ABC team, specifically involvingfermentation, digestion, preparation of crude extracts and screening ofcrude (and subsequent) fractions for antioxidant and immunomodulatoryactivities, and finally coordinating the study of the influence ofpurified compounds on cellular function (microbial and mammalian) usingamong other techniques, phenotypic micro-array analysis. Applicants mustbe able to demonstrate previous, high quality experience in extractiontechnologies, bio-activity screening, mammalian or microbial cellculture. The ideal candidate will become a committed, active member ofthis centre of excellence, and be able to work on their own initiative.You will be expected to discuss and plan industrially focused researchand development, and present data in both technical and non-technicalsituations, and develop new techniques appropriate to the demands ofnovel raw materials. You should hold a Ph.D. in an appropriatediscipline, with relevant post-doctoral research experience. Asignificant, prior publication record is highly desirable. The post istenable for up to three years.
If appointed you will be responsible for:
? collaborative and contract research;
? experimental design and method development;
? data collection, interpretation, and statistical analysis;
? report writing and presentation to industry and academic partners;
? preparation of papers on research findings for publication inpeer-reviewed journals;
? proper management and use of relevant experimental equipment;
? assisting in the development of new research projects.
Ideal Candidates will:
? be experienced researchers with ideally 2/3 years’ post-doctorallaboratory research experience;
? demonstrate relevant practical experience with industrial or appliedfocus in fermentation, extraction and screening technologies.
? have excellent communication skills.
Salary
A salary range of €35,000 to €45,000 will apply to this post dependingon qualifications and experience.
