Visual Neuroscience and Neuroprosthetics

NIH-funded positions are available for postdoctoral research associates to participate in research on cellular/molecular neuroscience of the retina or visual neuroprosthetics, in the laboratory of Dr. Gary Matthews in the Centers for Molecular Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Position 1. Presynaptic mechanisms of neurotransmitter release at ribbon synapses of the retina. The project uses combined patch-clamp electrophysiology, fluorescence imaging, and electron microscopy to study the dynamics and regulation of synaptic vesicle exocytosis and endocytosis at tonically releasing synapses of photoreceptors and retinal bipolar neurons. The laboratory has exceptional capabilities for conventional and multiphoton confocal imaging to track single vesicles in patch-clamped synaptic terminals, as well as unique capabilities for EM of individual physiologically characterized neurons.

Position 2. Optogenetic approaches to cell-based prosthesis for restoration of vision. The project involves development of methods for selective expression of light-gated ion channels/transporters in retinal bipolar neurons, to recapitulate light responses of on and off visual pathways in retinas whose natural photoreceptor cells have degenerated. Methods include transgenesis, cellular electrophysiology, and behavioral analysis of visual function.

Applicants for either position should have PhD in a relevant field of biomedical science, ideally with strong experience in molecular biology (Position 2) or in cellular electrophysiology (Position 1), as well as one or more first-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals. Prior experience in visual neuroscience is not required but would be advantageous. Stony Brook University is located on the beautiful north shore of Long Island, 1.5 hours from Manhattan, and has close ties to nearby Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
