Description
A post doctoral position available beginning Fall of 2009 to study the effects of novel anti-inflammatory agents on disease progression in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of human multiple sclerosis. We are interested to determine if treatment with novel agonists of the Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptors (PPARs), or with drugs which raise central catecholamine levels, will have beneficial effects in EAE, will reduce neuro inflammation or damage, or will influence patterns of neurogenesis particularly with respect to oligodendrocyte progenitor cells. Experience with immunocytochemical methodologies, induction and scoring of EAE, and with primary cultures of oligodendrocytes or of Tcells is requisite. Studies will include analysis of changes in brain gene expression, preparation of primary progenitor cells from rodents, evaluation of signaling pathways involved in OPC maturation, and in vitro studies using primary cultures of astrocytes and microglial cells.
Immunodetection methods including ELISA, 2-DIGE, westerns, and histology will be used to detect serum antibodies directed against novel S-nitrosocysteine epitopes in a translational project using samples from multiple sclerosis patients.
The research project has strong translational and clinical potential. Broad knowledge and adequate laboratory experience in this field, good command of spoken and written English and excellent communication and team skills are required. Priority will be given to candidates with a strong expertise in neuroimmunology, and inflammatory signaling pathways.
