Description

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher to study the role of SMN protein and its interactions with other proteins in the pathogenesis of spinal muscular atrophy, one of the commonest genetic disorders affecting infants. SMN complexes will be analyzed by mass spectrometry and other molecular techniques (see recent publication in BMC Cell Biology: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2121/8/28).

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, biology or related discipline and some knowledge or experience of protein biochemistry, immunochemistry or proteomics.

The successful candidate will join a team of biochemists, cell biologists, pathologists and clinicians in the recently-formed Wolfson Centre for Inherited Neuromuscular Disease, based at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry and linked academically to Keele University (www.rjah.nhs.uk/cind). The Centre is well-equipped with two confocal microscopes, two LC-tandem mass spectrometers (ABI 3200 and 4800), tissue culture and DNA cloning facilities.

The Centre has new, modern laboratories and a stress-free, rural location, very close to the mountains of Wales, but is within an hour or so by rail or road of Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester.

The appointment will be made in the mid-range of NHS Band 5, currently £19,166-£24,803 (pay award pending) and is available from Oct. 1st, 2007.
